It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. Examples of MEMS components are the accelerometers that are used as car airbag sensors, modern cell phones, gyroscopes for precise positioning and microfluidic devices used in biomedical applications.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_tta-panel\" id=\"1444300654691-e081e086-5ad3\" data-vc-content=\".vc_tta-panel-body\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"vc_tta-panel-title\"><a href=\"#1444300654691-e081e086-5ad3\" data-vc-accordion data-vc-container=\".vc_tta-container\"><span class=\"vc_tta-title-text\">Friction stir welding<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-body\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Friction stir welding, a new type of welding, was discovered in 1991 by The Welding Institute (TWI). The innovative steady state (non-fusion) welding technique joins materials previously un-weldable, including several aluminum alloys. It plays an important role in the future construction of airplanes, potentially replacing rivets. Current uses of this technology to date include welding the seams of the aluminum main Space Shuttle external tank, Orion Crew Vehicle test article, Boeing Delta II and Delta IV Expendable Launch Vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_tta-panel\" id=\"1444301268806-6cabfa0f-2e9d\" data-vc-content=\".vc_tta-panel-body\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"vc_tta-panel-title\"><a href=\"#1444301268806-6cabfa0f-2e9d\" data-vc-accordion data-vc-container=\".vc_tta-container\"><span class=\"vc_tta-title-text\">Composites<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-body\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Composites or composite materials are a combination of materials which provide different physical characteristics than either material separately.
